Forges of Hephaestus
Original abstract artwork
Size - 50 x 50cm
Acrylic and oil stick, on canvas
A summer trip to the wonderful Italian isle of Sicily was the driving force behind this body of work. These pieces seek to capture the feeling of basking in an ever-present wall of heat, against the backdrop of a multitude of stunning natural vistas.
One balmy evening in Taormina, I took a walk to a viewpoint from which the majestic Mount Etna could be seen rising out of the horizon against the hazy sky. Our visit fell just days after a major eruption, and the after-effects of this were visible across the island, with dust covering the land and hanging in the air. This painting is inspired by that dramatic scene, and takes its name from Greek mythology which tells of the god Hephaestus creating his blacksmiths forges underneath Mount Etna (and thus creating the sparks that fly from its mouth).
