A summer trip to the wonderful Italian isle of Sicily was the driving force behind this body of work. These pieces seek to capture the feeling of basking in an ever-present wall of heat, against the backdrop of a multitude of stunning natural vistas.
This painting is the result of a sweltering day in Palermo, when we sought refuge in the dappled shade of the botanical gardens. The high contrast of the shadows in the bright sun created a beautiful layering effect as the light fell across the many mature trees and tropical plants. (note, this piece has a ‘sister’ – Escape the heat ii. The 2 pieces are available separately, but also look good displayed as a set).
